Trip 2:29/8 - 5/9
Cycling adventure through the heart of Apulia and the coast of Salento
The journey begins in Alberobello, the fairytale town known for its white trulli houses with pointed stone roofs. From here we pedal south through the rolling landscape of Apulia, lined with olive groves, vineyards and small whitewashed villages.
Soon you will reach the coast and continue along the Adriatic Sea. The road winds past dramatic cliffs, small fishing villages and bright blue bathing bays. In the city of Otranto, the gateway to the east, you will be greeted by a mix of history and the pulse of the Mediterranean — with its Norman castle, Byzantine mosaics and lively promenade.
The tour continues down to Santa Maria di Leuca, Italy's southernmost tip, where the Adriatic Sea meets the Ionian Sea. Here the lighthouse tower stands like a sentry, and you have the feeling of having reached the end of the world.
On the way back north you cycle along the Ionian coast. Here the landscape changes -- the dramatic cliffs are swapped for miles-wide beaches, turquoise waters and small coastal towns such as Gallipoli, famous for its old town centre on an island, with narrow alleys and the scent of freshly grilled fish.
The trip ends in Lecce, often referred to as "The Florence of the South". The city's baroque architecture, magnificent churches and vibrant piazzas provide a magnificent finale to the cycling adventure.
This tour through Salento is a journey full of contrasts — from Alberobello's unique trulli houses to the rocky coast of Otranto, from the southern lighthouse of Leuca to the beaches of Gallipoli and the Baroque splendour of Lecce. An adventure for those who want to experience the real Italy with the bike as a companion.
On this adventure we rent bikes on site in Apulia. The bikes are good trekking bikes for the purpose, and are equipped with bags and water bottles.
We also carry all the packing on the bikes with us throughout the week - so-called bike packing.
